There are so many crystals on the market today and each have various different names; some of which are “nicknames” used for marketing by a specific retailer or wholesaler. So, with dozens of snazzy crystals available, where should someone start when building their collection from scratch?

My recommendation is go with crystals that are easy to find and versatile. Pick up a small handful of crystals that resonate with you and can work for many different purposes.

I’ve been working with crystals in one way or another for over 20 years and here are my top 5, “can’t live without ’em” crystals:

1). SMOKEY QUARTZ – This is my all-time “ride-or-die” crystal, for several reasons. For one, quartz is one of the most common crystals you’ll find on the market today. Smokey Quartz gets its grey to brown coloring from natural radiation from the Earth. This makes it a fantastic grounding stone and it is also thought to combat electromagnetic stress. In addition to being easily found and very grounding, it’s considered a “master healer”. In my own experience, I’ve found that this crystal works well to help combat many ailments, including stress, anxiety, pain, headaches, toxins, side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, insomnia… and the list goes on*. Actually, I have yet to find ANYTHING that this crystal hasn’t helped me with. Smokey Quartz also resonates with all 7 major chakras, which is a bonus!

*Disclaimer – crystal healing should never be used in place of standard medical care. Crystal healing is a support modality, meaning that crystals are a tool to help facilitate and support our own natural healing abilities and can complement any treatments prescribed by a licensed physician.

2). CARNELIAN – I always carry a Carnelian around in my pocket. It’s a wonderful mood-booster and has been used in many cultures to boost energy. I don’t find that, for me, this crystal actually provides a boost in energy, but rather it keeps me going for longer periods. Everyone has different reactions with crystals, so you may not experience the energy boosting properties the same way. All around, this is a very positive stone that may also help boost creativity, joy, and vitality; because of this, Carnelian resonates the most with the Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras. Carnelian is also a great “self-cleansing” stone, meaning that it doesn’t need to be cleared as often as other crystals and can actually help “clear” or “recharge” other stones.

3). ROSE QUARTZ – Rose Quartz has a very gentle vibration, so I use it most when I need a “time-out” from whatever is going on. Rose Quartz is calming, loving, and compassionate. If you’re ever feeling upset, sad, or just negative in general, this is a great crystal to have around. Whenever my little ones get upset, I give them a tumbled Rose Quartz to hold and they sit down, close their eyes, and take 3 deep breaths. Almost instantly, they’re calmer and ready to talk to me about what’s bothering them. If you’re a parent, I would highly recommend having one (or two!) of these crystals in your collection.

4). SODALITE – Honestly, I know everyone raves about Amethyst and it’s ability to expand intuition, but my favorite crystal for that has to be Sodalite. This crystal is definitely an underrated one. Sodalite doesn’t just resonate with the 3rd Eye chakra, but also with the Throat chakra, so this little crystal helps you speak your truth. For this reason, I would definitely recommend Sodalite to any Readers  (Tarot, Oracle Cards, Runes, Astrology, Mediums – any kind of intuitive reader). Sodalite helps keep me balanced and focused while working on expanding my intuition and walking my spiritual path; which is definitely a good thing for me!

5). MOSS AGATE – This is another great “mommy crystal” (also good for dads too!) as Moss Agate is considered a “birthing stone”. This crystal is gentle, grounding and connects us with the spirit of the Earth itself. Moss Agate isn’t just a great stone to have around when you’re in labor (I’ve found that it helps keep me grounded and alleviates a lot of the not-so-fun symptoms of labor), but this stone is a wonderful one for manifestation. Since this is a “birthing” stone, it can be used for the birth of ideas, new projects, or to help you through any other “beginning”. Also, since this is a very earthy stone, it’s a great one to have around if you’re a gardener. I sprinkle Moss Agate chips in my planters and it has really done well to promote the health and vitality of my plants (something I desperately need as I’ve been known to kill plants!). This crystal is also said to alleviate symptoms of depression and help balance the digestive system* – both wins for me!

Honestly, if I were stranded on a deserted island and only had five crystals in my pocket, it would be these! I know I didn’t touch on some of the more popular crystals, like Amethyst, Clear Quartz or Citrine – and that’s okay! Really, my top five will probably differ from your top five because we all need different things. I chose these crystals based on how often I work with them and how versatile they are; which is something I value greatly. When it comes to crystals, I always love a good “jack-of-all-trades”. 🙂
